What is an essential nutrient?
A nutrient is an essential nutrient if and only if:
- Cannot be manufactured by the body.
- Must be taken in from outside (food / supplement) sources.
- Is essential to human health.
- Deficiency disease inevitably results, over time, if an essential nutrient is eliminated from diet.

Fact#2 We are not what we eat, we are what we absorb
Digestion and absorption is important. We absorb nutrients best from organic sources vs. inorganic sources. Huh? Organic sources are plant-based sources, as in when the plant sucks up the nutrients from the soil. Inorganic sources are the soil, or rock or clay, we are not made to digest inorganic materials. So iron form the ground is not readily available for the body to absorb but iron in, say, spinach, is. We need to eat plants that have sucked up the minerals from the ground. We don’t eat dirt so why is eating healthy not enough? Lets look at fact #3
“To receive the same amount of iron you used to get from one apple in 1950, by 1998 you had to eat 26 apples; today  you have to eat 36”
Plants can make vitamins but they cannot make minerals. If the minerals are not in the soil, they will not be in the plant.
We aren't saying don't eat naturally but just beware of not being able to get what you need from food alone. This means we must supplement our diets with the nutrients we lack in order to keep our body healthy.
Ok, lets go to the vitamin store and pick up some supplements. A good multi-vitamin is about $20, right? Well the average multi-vitamin has about 20 to 25 nutrients, and the typical nutritional supplement is only 8 -12% absorbable because it's much less expensive to use inorganic materials. Also, when you are taking one supplement at a time, you don't know the right combination for your body to best absorb what you are taking. You couldn't know the right balance of "co-factors".
We need all 90 nutrients just for our bodies to survive and to be deficient in even one (1) could lead to disease* (much like Scurvy is a disease resulting from a lack of vitamin C), which a healthy body is whole point here, right?
